Hendon NW4 · Hip pain
Walk, climb and sleep without hip pain
Arthritis, outer hip pain, a stiff hip or recovering from a hip replacement. Expert hip physio at our Hendon clinic on Parson Street.

Quick answer: most hip pain comes from the hip joint itself (often early arthritis), the tendons on the outside of the hip, or the muscles and tendons around the groin. A physiotherapy assessment usually pinpoints which, often without a scan. For most of these, a strengthening programme with hands-on treatment is the first-line treatment. If you’ve had a hip replacement, a structured rehab plan is what gets you from walking with sticks back to the things you enjoy.
Hip pain in a hilly corner of London
Hendon isn’t flat. Church End rises to around 85 metres and the roads around it fall away steeply, so a trip to the shops on Brent Street or a walk in Sunny Hill Park or Hendon Park quickly shows up a sore hip.
One of the first things our patients ask us is whether their hip pain means they’ll need a replacement. Many people come to us believing that once a hip is “worn”, nothing can be done. That isn’t true. Even with arthritis, the right exercise programme often makes a real difference to pain and walking.
Our Hendon clinic is at 16 Parson Street, with some patient parking behind the clinic and pay by phone bays on Parson Street, Church Road and Brent Street.

Outer hip pain: why injections aren’t the whole answer
Pain on the outside of the hip is one of the most common problems we see in Hendon, especially in women over 40. It used to be called bursitis, but in most people it’s the gluteal tendons that are the main source.
In the LEAP trial, people with this kind of pain who had education and a targeted exercise programme did better at 8 weeks than those who had a steroid injection or simply waited. Simple changes help too, such as not sitting with your legs crossed and not hanging on one hip when you stand.
We find patients are often relieved to hear that outer hip pain usually responds well to the right exercises, without needing another injection.
Recovering from a hip replacement
Patients tell us the first few weeks after a hip replacement are the hardest: getting in and out of the car, managing stairs and sleeping comfortably. Your surgeon will give you specific guidance on how far you can move the hip early on. We follow it.
From there, rehab is about rebuilding the strength in your hip and leg, walking without a limp, getting rid of the sticks and getting back to what you enjoy. Our physios work closely with the orthopaedic surgeons who refer to us and keep your consultant updated if anything needs their input.
- Before surgery: prehab to build strength and learn your exercises.
- First weeks: safe movement, walking, stairs and car transfers.
- Middle phase: strength, balance and walking without a limp.
- Later phase: longer walks, hills, the gym or sport.

When to get your hip checked urgently
Seek urgent medical help if you can’t put weight on your leg after a fall, your hip is hot, red and swollen with a fever, or you develop sudden severe hip or groin pain with no clear cause. After a hip replacement, contact your surgical team straight away if the wound becomes red, hot or leaks, or your calf becomes painful and swollen.
Book an assessment if your hip pain hasn’t settled after a few weeks, is affecting your sleep or walking, or keeps coming back.

Your questions answered
Can physiotherapy help hip arthritis?
Yes. Exercise is a core treatment for hip osteoarthritis in NICE guidance, because stronger muscles around the hip take load off the joint and ease pain. Hands-on treatment and advice on activity help too.
Is outer hip pain bursitis?
It’s often called bursitis, but in most people the gluteal tendons are the main source of pain on the outside of the hip. It usually responds well to a targeted exercise programme and some simple changes to how you sit, stand and sleep.
When should I start physio after a hip replacement?
Many people start soon after leaving hospital, following their surgeon’s instructions. Bring your discharge letter or rehab protocol to your first appointment.
Do I need a scan for hip pain?
Often not. A thorough assessment usually tells us what’s causing your pain. If something doesn’t add up or isn’t improving, we can arrange onward referral or imaging.
Is there parking at the Hendon clinic?
There is some patient parking behind the clinic, reached via Studio Mews off Glebe Crescent, plus pay by phone bays on Parson Street, Church Road, Brent Street and Finchley Lane.
