How to make getting out of the car easier🚗

Many of our patients experience difficulty getting out of the car. You’re seated low, your hips and knees are bent and you have to twist, rotate and get out the car- which can be tricky. If something isn’t working well, it shows up here quickly.

The most common reasons our physios find causing these difficulties getting out the car include:

5 practical tips that can make getting out the car easier:

  1. Use a lumbar roll cushion in the small of your back: This helps maintain the arch in your lower back, preventing your lumbar spine from slouching and causing compression.
  2. Pump up your seat, higher: Try having your hips higher than your knees, to reduce strain on your hips and on your low back.
  3. Bring both legs out together: Instead of twisting sharply, swivel your hips so both feet come out of the car together. This reduces strain on your back.
  4. Use your hands wisely: If you have some weakness in your legs, helping by pushing through the door frame or seat to assist your legs can be helpful.
  5. Build strength where it matters: Strong hips, thighs and core muscles make standing up far easier and more controlled. Even simple, targeted exercises done consistently can make a noticeable difference.
