Our Back Pain Treatment Approach

We believe in a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to treating back pain. We have helped thousands of people recover, our approach includes:

1. Mobilisation Of The Spine Joints

We use specialist manual therapy techniques and Maitland, Mulligan and McKenzie spinal mobilisation techniques to restore normal mobility to the vertebral joints in the back.

2. Soft Tissue Release Techniques

Trigger Point release, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques and deep tissue massage are some of the ways we release the painful muscle spasm and tension from the back.

3. Postural and Movement Analysis

Poor posture and movement patterns can be key contributors to back pain. We assess your posture, gait, and biomechanics to provide corrective strategies and ergonomic advice.

4. Spinal Decompression and Nerve Mobilisation Techniques

For conditions like sciatica and pinched nerves, we use techniques aiming to decompress pinched or trapped nerves. This includes nerve mobilisation and gliding techniques to allow the nerve to move more freely again.

5. Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Where appropriate using acupuncture can be a very effective adjunct to relieve back pain, muscle spasm and restore movement into the back and spine.

6. Personalised Exercise Rehabilitation Programmes

We design targeted strengthening and flexibility exercises for each patient individually to restore mobility and improve core strength. A structured rehabilitation programme helps prevent future episodes of back pain.

7. Hydrotherapy and Aquatic Therapy

Restoring movement and reducing pain in the pool can be very effective way to make progress- particularly when movement is very painful.

8. Education and Self-Management Strategies

Empowering our patients is a key part of our BOOST PHYSIO philosophy. We provide guidance on lifestyle modifications, sleep positions, and self-care strategies to manage and prevent back pain long-term.

Yoga or Pilates? Swimming or Walking? Which is better to help back pain?2025-03-21T14:09:23+00:00

Medical research and evidence shows conclusively that exercise is an essential part of helping to treat, manage and resolve back pain and backache.  BOOST PHYSIO’s team create a personalised programme appropriate for each individual we treat and is suitable to help improve their condition.  There is no conclusive proof or evidence that one form of exercise is superior to another.  For example is swimming better than pilates?  Is yoga better for back pain than walking?  There is no evidence to say one type of exercise is superior to another type of exercise.  For exercise to be effective it must be done consistently and regularly and we always recommend patients choose something they enjoy, that is accessible to them and will help improve mobility, strength and fitness without triggering back pain.

How long does back pain last for?2025-03-21T14:10:04+00:00

Every case of back pain is different. Some cases of back pain get better and recover in a few days, other cases may take a very long time.  Back pain or backache that is localised to the spine area only- around 80% of cases resolve within 6 weeks.   If the back pain is accompanied with shooting or referred pain down the leg or arm, which might indicate a pinched or irritated nerve, time frames can take longer for recovery.
